No matter how excellent one claims to be at making decisions and believes to move through life smoothly and steadily, there are times when despite his intellect and all of his good knowledge, he needs some consultation, maybe an advice or maybe consolation is all he needs. Man is sent into the world alone, but being in this world, it is impossible for him to exist all alone for the entirety of his life cycle. Often in our lives, we need someone to just sit and listen us. And this is quite natural. For this we need someone, known as “mentor”. I wouldn’t call mentor a word; rather it is a term with a very profound meaning.
After knowing the need, the question arises who is your mentor? How can you find him in different situations and aspects of life? A very simple answer to this question is a person who provides guidance and counsel as well as resources to help you grow in your career or personal life is your mentor. Your life mentors are all around you if you look for them. Most of the time from family, any teacher of you, any friend or maybe your boss from job. Keep focused otherwise you will miss a chance to recognize them.
IMPORTANCE OF MENTOR IN LIFE
When your brain does not respond, when your morale needs to be encouraged, you express your thoughts, and as a consequence, your mentor provides you with a suitable answer or just a tip.
1. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
Mentors have a way of seeing more of our faults that we would like. It’s the only way we grow.
In certain situations we are stuck in, we keep thinking our perspective alright and most of the time we blame the otherwise happenings. A mentor analysis the actual issue and let us know our mistakes as well. They show us our blunders in that scenario. In this way we try to put forward our efforts to make positive improvements from our side.
2. ANSWER IN THEIR QUESTIONS
My mentor used to pose questions for me giving specific time, and then come to him with the answers. In this whole process of me thinking, most of the time, I got many things that were unanswered to me before. Only from his questions, I got the queries solved myself.
3. ENCOURAGEMENT
How worse the condition gets, how bad you feel yourself stuck in any phase of life, there is always a hope stuck in your own self. A mentor is someone who let you see the hope inside yourself. He encourages you that you got the power to go through this time.
4. LEARNING FROM THEIR EXPERIENCE
In the process of counselling, mentors keep in mind the things they learnt from their experiences and make sure that you never repeat those mistakes. Hence the directly tell you the right things they recognized later.
5. PERSONAL GROWTH
Mentors discover strategies to promote your self-development. Guiding you in every perspective, enables you to see the right things yourself next time. Your personality gets groomed. You get confidence. Also you get the qualities of leadership. The way your mentor did your counselling, you can do to yourself next time and even to another person in need.
6. DEVELOPING POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Having a mentor is not a sign of weakness; it shows you are smart enough and are driven enough to succeed.
Mentor makes a positive mindset of his mentee. Hence, he treats upcoming happenings more wisely and calmly.
How can you become a mentor?
Somewhere in your circle, perhaps someone is seeing you as his mentor. To be effective in different stages of this journey, you as a mentor need to have high patience, a very good listening habit and a very good communication skill. Maintain a positive mindset, constantly adding value, helping the relationship evolve and taking on different responsibilities at different stages. A benefit of being mentor in a mentorship is that you keep learning certain things with your mentee. Also you will develop good leadership skill in yourself.
